Descriptions

Reflections on Impermanence
An outdoor drawing series by Lake Merritt. Fall is a time of breakdown, decay and decomposition, perhaps loss and grief. It is the perfect season to reflect on the profound impermanence of all things through observation of nature. Drawing will be oriented with short dharma talks on impermanence. Participants will compose 6 drawings of the same chosen object of observation. The series will culminate in an optional show of student work with a reception on Day of the Dead.

Please bring: appropriate clothing for weather, water, sketchbook 8" x 10" or larger, pencils, a pencil sharpener, and any other materials you would like to work with

Watercolor Basics (beginner)
We will focus on the fundamentals of watercolor painting, including composition, layering, light and shadow, and basic color theory. We will start with drawing and monochromatic paintings, then explore color theory, and finally work on a full, complex watercolor composition. Exercises will involve painting from life and from photo references and will include an individual project. Homework will be assigned on a weekly basis to keep students practicing.

Watercolor Brilliance (intermediate to advanced)

We will focus advanced techniques in watercolor painting and explore the expressive capacities of the medium. We will start with a review of basic watercolor painting and composition and delve more deeply into the directions that students are naturally inclined towards, whether they are technique, design, or narrative elements. Exercises will involve painting from life and photo references and will incorporate individual projects and assessments (rather than critiques). Individuals will be highly encouraged to incorporate other media (such as gouache, ink, pastel, etc) into the watercolor as well as work on tightening up their technique. Homework will be assigned on a weekly basis to keep students practicing.

Contemplative Drawing

In this course, I will lead students in contemplative drawing, a practice that slows down the mind and anchors it in observation. Unlike a traditional drawing & composition class, this course will focus on the process of drawing and reflecting, rather than the finished product. Rather than being instructed on “how to draw,” students will be guided through drawing exercises that will encourage them in their own discovery and inquiry of the objects as we see them. By learning to become still and intimately observing an object in the world for what it is, students will be better able to observe the larger world for what it is. This class heavily emphasizes practice of basic drawing techniques that bring concentration to the present moment. We will bring in some principles from Zen & Taoist art as well as some Yoga philosophy. Drawing exercises will include contour, gesture and direct perception exercises and will be accompanied by reflective writing. Because this is not a skills-based class, anyone, from beginner/non-artist to seasoned artist will benefit from and be challenged by this class.

Materials: a sketchpad, some soft pencils (4B - 6B), a pencil sharpener, and a few sticks of vine charcoal.
